EMILY DEMAIO REFLECTS ON TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE IN THE ACTORS STUDIO OF NEW JERSEY'S "AMERICAN IDIOT: IN CONCERT"

Emily DeMaio, who starred as Whatsername in The Actors Studio of New Jersey's (ASNJ) recent production of Green Day's "American Idiot: In Concert," shares her insights on the groundbreaking performance that took place on December 20, 2024, at The Dunellen Theater.

DeMaio describes the production as a "transformative experience," praising the warm and professional environment fostered by ASNJ. The fast-paced rehearsal process, while challenging, pushed her outside her comfort zone in an empowering way. She particularly noted the thrill of performing in a rock venue setting, which allowed her to embrace a true rockstar persona.

“The raised stage and concert-style format made me feel like a true rockstar, allowing me to unleash my performance in a new and exhilarating way," DeMaio remarked. Despite the brief rehearsal period, DeMaio highlighted the strong bond formed among the cast and the trust placed in them by the creative team. This supportive atmosphere encouraged artistic exploration and risk-taking, resulting in a dynamic and engaging performance.

One of the standout moments for DeMaio was performing "Letterbomb" with her female castmates, which elicited unexpected and electrifying audience participation. She also appreciated the opportunity to explore a rawer, more rock-oriented version of her character, Whatsername. Looking ahead, DeMaio expressed excitement about the future of The Actors Studio of New Jersey. She believes their innovative approach to staging one-night-only concert-style shows has the potential to significantly influence the local theater scene."

The Actors Studio of New Jersey is definitely a company to watch in the coming years!" DeMaio concluded.

This production of "American Idiot: In Concert" marks a significant milestone for ASNJ, being their inaugural performance in partnership with the Township of Dunellen. The show, directed and choreographed by Michael Restaino, featured a talented cast including Shelly Verden, Sam Vana, Bennett Safsel, Will Braxton Coffey, Andre Williams, Alyssa Wray, Juliana Conte, and others.
